There were 5 huge manta rays on the deeper sandy bottom. Two of them glided over the shallow reef to be cleaned, hovering like a small plane practicing 360's around a wingtip.
"Dolphins, headed right for you! If you ever get a photo of dolphins and mantas, this is your chance!" Kit yelled from the helm.
I waited over the mantas. The mantas never reacted as 88 or so dolphins streamed by on either side of us. I was frantic, trying to fit both into one frame, turning the camera longways, watching for the dolphins closest to any of the five mantas. Particularly, I waited by the mantas over the reef. The video shows my frustration, my frantic pans from mantas to dolphins, as I hoped for the two to converge.

You can hear my surprise and triumph as the dolphins come between me floating at the surface and the mantas right on top of the reef.

Dolphin Dreams,
Roberta Goodman
Wild Dolphin Swims Hawaii
Kailua Kona

Roberta presenting at SETI Contact Conference

Wild Dolphin Swims Hawaii's Roberta Goodman presenting a talk at

http://Contact-Conference.org

Love to see you there~!!!

Announcing CONTACT 2012

• A Premier Forum for the Future •

Astronomers have given us a new bucketful of worlds to consider for habitable

planets and inhabitable star systems.At

CONTACT 2012 we will explore this

new galaxy of possibilities with NASA and SETI scientists, noted science fiction

authors, artists, composers, and others. The

event was such a success that we will again return to the thrilling days of

yesteryear at CONTACT 2012 with

COTI Classic. This will please those longtimers

who have been clamoring for a return for years, and newcomers who can now

join the event that made our initial conferences so successful. About five adult and 2 young bottlenose were playing with fish. I slid in to film. The water was quite murky from recent wave action. Adults were seriously tearing through the fish and spinning around them. The babies, about 6 months old perhaps, were watching and had time to check me out. When one adult caught a fish, the others gathered around. I think that this isnt a usual prey and the others wondered what it tasted like. Both babies came to nurse their moms right after, which is in the video.
After the catch I saw that there were two sharks on the bottom, perhaps sand bar sharks, quickly turning back and forth over the reef.

Previous video of bottlenose playing with a fish ball...
<iframe width="560" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/UBs_tV-EUsY?rel=0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Seeing dorsal fins popping up around the boat, we checked out what was going on. Below the boat we saw a huge dark cloud, turned out to be a fish ball. I got into the water to film.
Nine bottlenose dolphins were spending the morning playing with a school of fish. The dolphins weren't hunting, no open mouth attempts to catch the fish. The adult bots were doing what I was doing, scanning the bottom below us with long distance sonar beams. They created a safe playground for the young bottlenose.
The youngsters glided into and around the fish ball, stroking them almost and creating patterns. The fish didn't seem to mind the dolphins and the dolphins didn't seem to mind my presence.
My camera memory ran out, doggoneit! Later I found that most of my footage was out of focus unfortunately.
These fish are thought to be escapees from the nearby fish farm. Our guest on the boat trip noticed ‘rocks inthe water,’ dorsal fins, half a mile outside the harbor as we approachedhumpbacks in the area. A scattered podof 10 or so pilot whales were lying at the calm surface, barely travelingnorthward. There were a number of largemales, distinguished by much larger dorsal fins than the females. The first time I saw a large group of mixedmales, females, & young, was with John Lilly off Maui. I thoughtwe were seeing two different species together, three including the bottlenosedolphins also in the crowd, because the fins were so disparate in size.

<span style="color: #548dd4; Oceanicsare reputed to be aggressive and have investigated, hit, several photographersI know in Hawaii. Lee Tepley and Ifilmed a white tip at an offshore buoy for about 40 minutes before he gotnervous as the shark circled closer. I was nervous the entire time, and that’swhat photographing these large creatures entails, balancing control of irrationalfeelings and sensitivity to intuition. My goal was to film Lee filming the shark, and we did get that shot, butI really wanted to have the shark between us, to get a better idea of its size, and that didn’t happen.

<span style="color: #548dd4; Bysome reports they may attack spinner dolphins. I’ve had quite comfortable encounters with them while in the water, andtimes I have huddled next to the boat and had others get immediately out of thewater. The dolphins were everywhere you looked. Lots of new babies, three went under us that were only about 2 weeks old.
Then my focus found something different among all the dolphins, right below us --quite a large shark was strolling around down there! I signaled the captain, with a hand placed upright in the center of my head, and he brought the boat a little closer as the students caught on and gathered close around the boat. Some students were too fascinated to leave. My swim guide, Jan, and I held hands and kept between the shark and our group. He was so close to the surface, not bothered by us at all, and dolphins were darting in to take a closer look.
Bigger than the dolphins, Jan did some research & figures what I was told was a sand shark, seems to be a "bar shark" and this one about 10ft. I've seen these sharks before in the same area, sometimes 3-4 or them together. It was fun to watch the dolphins. They moved quite quickly around it, but didn't startle the shark, the shark just gracefully moved around all the commotion. Our students stayed calm and started coming back towards the shark as Jan and I herded it, or thought we were herding it, away from everyone. It moved off, out of our sight, and the captain said the big male dolphins had moved in around it. That was the second most interactive shark I've been with!
Then we went up to see the giant manta rays at a cleaning station and were lucky -- 3 large mantas hovered under us and over the reef for as long as we were in the water, about 20 minutes. Koie, a 12' female was among them. A highlight for many of the students. We got in again with the dolphins coming our way, and a group of students got to swim with 4 spotted dolphins too!
Quite a day, the weather and waves calm and bright!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://robertagoodman.blogspot.com/2011/10/university-of-hawaii-foreign-exchange.html' title='University of Hawaii foreign exchange students swim with dolphins! WILD DOLPHIN SWIMS HAWAII KONA COAST BOAT TRIPS

ROBERTA GOODMAN & WILD DOLPHIN SWIMS HAWAII ANNOUNCE 4 WEEK PROGRAM OF KONA COAST BOAT TRIPS

Come to Hawaii and help create the basis of a new kind of friendship, with dolphins that remain wild & free. The dolphins allow us to join their pods in play or travel while continuing their wild lifestyle in front of our eyes and all around us. Join our boat trips right along the Kona coastline to observe the dolphins’ behavior among themselves and interactions with us.
Occasionally their mood shifts to include us more closely ~ watching our play, testing our responses, challenging us. It’s such a privilege to not only be able to observe the dolphins, but also to be the focus of their attention for a few moments. We are fortunate to be among them as they live free in the wild, displaying natural behavior in pods of 100 or more.
When new findings of the physiology of dolphins are applied to what we observe, we find we have a window into possibilities for the future of our human relationships and societies. We have so much to learn from the cohesive nature of dolphin pods ~ it’s a revelation!
You can be a part of this unique phenomena of being accepted into the wild dolphins’ home and bringing back to your life and our humanity what you have learned from an extraordinary friendship with another species.
Six students of dolphins will join me for the month of July. We will go out on a boat 5 days a week for 4 hours each day to encounter the dolphins. Our chances of finding them everyday are 99%. With great respect and immense curiosity, we shall join the pods by boat and in the water. Combined with unparalleled stories and knowledge from my 30 years of study and dolphin encounters, we will expand our understandings of dolphins and ourselves.
The Big Island has amazing natural beauty and a powerful cultural heritage which you will have time to explore and enjoy.
Please consider joining this small group in July 2011 for the experiences of a lifetime! If you are sincerely interested in this program, please contact me so we can decide if it is a fit for you.
The price is for all the boat trips, gear, and lunch aboard. Housing, food, transportation, and other costs are separate. Shared housing and transportation with the other guests may be coordinated. The cost is $2800 per person.
I am looking forward to hearing from you and the experiences we will have in July!
With much aloha,
Roberta
roberta@wilddolphinswimshawaii.com

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://robertagoodman.blogspot.com/2011/05/roberta-goodman-wild-dolphin-swims.html' title='ROBERTA GOODMAN &
